Continuing Resolution, The Government Stays Open.

U.S.House of Representatives
U.S.House of Representatives

Sometimes, I wish they would shut down the government for a few months so we could get a break from all the nastiness, infighting, and jockeying for more pork! It seems it would be better for the Country if Congress would leave us alone and let us go about our business without their guiding hand.

This past weekend was an example of the Congress doing what it always does; putting off the budget to keep the government open for another few months so they could go home for Christmas. They would have to deal with keeping the government open in a few months, as usual. The House loaded up an 1800-page bill that would keep the government open but would fund a bunch of pork projects that no citizen in his right mind would vote for. Cooler heads pared the legislation down to 136 pages. We may have dogged a bullet but the war for doner-based legislation is not over. I urge you to read this piece.

DAVID MARCUS: De facto President Trump's handling of shutdown threat was a masterclass

You can see how your Representative voted by looking at the link below to Clerk United States House of Representatives.

After watching Fox News going on and on about the last-minute spending Bill, I felt it was my duty to call my Representative and two Senators and tell them how I felt about spending our money on worthless projects. The Senators, both Democrats voted for it. My congressman voted for it.

In the end, there were 34 nay votes all by Republicans, and all the rest of the congressmen in attendance voted for the bill to pass and it went on to the Senate. I am posting the letter sent to me by Congressman Rick Allen detailing with what was in the cut-down bill.

Dear Mr. Glaser,

Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 10545, the American Relief Act. I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this very important issue.

As you may know, H.R. 10545 would extend government funding through March 14 and provides much-needed assistance to help American farmers and communities affected by recent natural disasters. This bill:

  • Funds the government at current discretionary spending levels through March 14, 2025.

Provides $100 billion in supplemental emergency spending to aid states affected by natural disasters.

  • Provides $10 billion in economic assistance to farmers dealing with crop loss, government overregulation, and market forces outside of their control.

  • Provides $5.7 billion to support the submarine industrial base, necessary to meet U.S. production goals.

  • Extends current farm bill programs through September 30, 2025.

  • Extends the National Flood Insurance Program through March 14, 2025.

  • Authorizes an increase from 90% to 100% federal cost-sharing for repairs to the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, MD.

  • Resets the PAYGO scorecard to prevent automatic cuts to Medicare, defense, agriculture, and other mandatory programs from taking effect in January.

  • Extends expiring health care programs through March 31, 2025, fully offset by a reduction in the Medicare Improvement Fund.

Includes the following programs:

  • Community Health Centers and other public health programs

  • Medicare add-on payments for ambulances, certain low-volume and Medicare-dependent hospitals, and rural providers

  • Medicare telehealth flexibilities

  • Delay of scheduled Obamacare cuts to Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospitals (DSH)

  • DEA scheduling authority for fentanyl-related substances

Hurricane Helene brought unprecedented devastation to every county across Georgia's 12th District and exacerbated the dire economic crisis that our families and farmers are facing. I supported passage of H.R. 10545 to help secure critical disaster aid as well as economic assistance for our farmers so they can continue to plant next year. I will never turn my back on the families, producers, and residents of the 12th District and am hopeful this effort will ensure our communities can continue to rebuild.
