AI For the Rest of Us

Updated: Jul 21, 2023

“There’s no one thing that defines AI. It’s more like a tapestry of modern intelligent technologies knit together in a strategic fashion that can then uplift and create a knowledge base that is automated — where you can extrapolate findings from there.”John Freemont, founder, and chief strategy officer, Hypergiant1

Understanding the new technology, artificial intelligence can be intricate, complicated,

perplexing and complicated. This blog will be about me, how AI affects me, and perhaps you, the casual user.

If you want to dive more deeply into this subject, I refer you to this Website: Artificial Intelligence in Britannica2 The article is long but broken up into small portions. I found it very informative.

If you are interested in art, you might want to see how AI can be used to create new art and use what is available to create something new from something you have not envisioned before. Try this Website: DALL·E 2 is an AI system that can create realistic images and art from a description in natural language.3

Allan Touring Pioneer in computers and AI

My earliest encounter with AI was my introduction to a program named Grammarly. Some of you may already have this app on your phone, tablet, or computer. My first use of the program was to correct spelling and some grammar in my emails. Grammarly asks if you want to change what you wrote to Grammarly's corrected version of what your words should be. The programmers added grammar, and I found that to be a big help. Most of the time, I miss putting a comma before the word and.

When I started school at Southeastern Technical College, the Grammarly program became more valuable due to my requirements in writing for college. My spelling is ridiculously bad. Sometimes my grammar is as bad as an immigrant who just got off the boat. Grammarly wants to repair the damage. Sometimes they do not get my meaning right, so I must ignore their suggestion. An example is my word “mankind.” Garmmarly wanted to change it to “humankind.” We all know what that is about. I left the word in its original format. This is a very helpful program, but you must stay in charge of the corrections. You can see how Grammarly works here:4

Example of poor text composition. They are the salt of the artj. It pains me to see them treted this way In another universrse they would be eggsonerated and released.

Text fixed by AI. They are the salt of the earth. It pains me to see them treated this way. In another universe, they would be incarcerated and released. Notice the correction should be exonerated. You must pay attention.

While doing my studies in Adobe Photoshop, our class turned to a chapter that instructed us on how to use the program to remove unwanted backgrounds. At the time, I was completely impressed with this technology. When the background was removed, the program knew how to use the adjoining pixels to recreate a similar background using the pixels that were already there. A pixel is a tiny square of data that is a color. The typical computer screen uses 960 pixels for the width of the usable area, no matter the size of the screen.

AI recreates a new background using the pixels that are left, and it is possible to edit them if you want a different result. This is not magic; it is technology. As with most innovation, the copiers are anxious to get on the gravy train, and we have apps now that will do this magic trick, and you do not have to purchase a subscription from Adobe. Here is a link to inPixio:5. This is a free download, but they do have upgraded versions available if you need them and are willing to pay. These are some other apps for removing backgrounds and all-around photo editing.6

AI is creeping into our lives, and it is here to stay. Do you plan to embrace it, or are you going to ignore it? Will artificial intelligence take over the world? Who knows?
